Your gear: three scenes that shoot anything

You do not need a studio. You need three scenes set up once: the car, your talking-head studio at home, and on the move. Almost every reality show moment happens in one of the three. Set them up, and you can film any episode any day.

The core kit goes everywhere

The same two cameras and two mics move between all three scenes. Buy these first. Everything else is a mount or a light that stays in its scene.

Scene 1 · The car

The car is the confession booth of reality TV. People say true things in a car: on the way to the meeting, after the bad news, before the big moment. It is also the scene you can film every single day without setting anything up.

WIND-SHIELD YOU guest A B A · sun visor mount: close on youB · window mount: wide, both seats
  1. Clip camera A on the sun visor, pointed at your face, slightly above eye level.
  2. Stick camera B on the back passenger window, wide enough to see both front seats.
  3. Mic on you, second mic on your passenger. Receiver on camera A.
  4. Plug both cameras into the car charger and press record before you pull out.
RuleNever film while you are fiddling with the camera at a light. Set it, start it, then drive. Safety first: if a shot needs you to look at the camera, film it parked.

Scene 2 · Your talking-head studio at home

This is where you talk straight to the viewer: confessionals, lessons, lives, ads, your webinar. One corner of one room, set up once and left standing. Pick the spot with a wall behind you that looks like you, or use the green screen and we swap in any background.

green screen or your real wall YOU KEY light45° left, brightest FILL light45° right, softer BACK light Aeye level Bside angle
  1. Key light 45° to one side, a little above your eyes. It is the brightest.
  2. Fill light 45° to the other side, half as bright, so there are no hard shadows.
  3. Back light behind you, aimed at your hair and shoulders, so you stand out from the wall.
  4. Camera A straight on at eye level. Camera B off to the side for the cutaway angle.
  5. Mic clipped to your shirt, a hand's width below your chin.
Fast versionNo time for three lights? Face a window, put the ring light right behind the camera, and record. The three-point setup is for the sizzle, ads and your webinar.

Scene 3 · On the move

Walking into the building, meeting a client, the trip, the event, the store. This is where the story moves forward, and where most of your sizzle reel shots come from. The camera already steadies itself, so you only add a grip, a mic and power.

YOU A B walking A · you hold it on the grip, arm's length, slightly above eyesB · a friend or crew member follows from behind or the side
  1. Camera A on the extension grip, held at arm's length, a little above your eyes. Walk slowly and talk.
  2. If someone is with you, they carry camera B and film you from behind or the side: the "following them" shot that makes it look like TV.
  3. Mic on you. If you meet someone, mic them too with the second transmitter.
  4. Battery handle on, spare card in your pocket.
Ask firstAnyone who will be clearly on camera signs a release (it is on your Bridge). In stores and offices, ask before you film.
