How to call and record

Every call you make for us is recorded. Recordings are how we coach you, and they count as shown work. This page shows you how, on a computer or on your phone.

Say this at the start of every call:"Hi, it's [your name] with RealityShow.com. Just so you know, this call is recorded so our team can help you better. Is that okay?" If they say no, stop the recording and keep talking.

1. Set up Google Voice on your computer (one time)

  1. Use Google Chrome (Mac or PC). Get it at google.com/chrome if you don't have it.
  2. Go to voice.google.com and sign in with the Google account that has your Google Voice number.
  3. Click โš™๏ธ Settings โ†’ Calls, and make sure "Web" is on for making calls. When Chrome asks to use your microphone, click Allow.
  4. Wear earbuds or a headset with a mic. It sounds better and stops echo.
  5. Make a test call to your own cell phone. If you can hear yourself, you're set.

2. Record a call (works the same on Mac and PC)

  1. Open Google Voice in one Chrome tab. Open this page in another Chrome tab.
  2. On this page, press Start recording below.
  3. Chrome shows a list. Click the Chrome Tab option, pick the Google Voice tab, make sure "Also share tab audio" is switched ON, then click Share. Allow the microphone if asked.
  4. Go back to the Google Voice tab and make your call. You'll see the red dot here counting.
  5. When you hang up, come back and press Stop and save. The file downloads, named with the person and the time.
  6. Drag the file into your Google Drive folder. That's it.

Tip: you can leave one recording running for a whole block of calls, then stop and save once. Just say each person's name at the start of their call.

Or record your computer with any app you like

Any app that records your computer's sound and your microphone works. Test it once: record a call to your own cell and play it back. You should hear both voices.

  1. Loom (Mac or PC, free): loom.com. Install the Chrome extension, pick "Current tab" on the Google Voice tab, mic on.
  2. PC: press Windows + Alt + R (Xbox Game Bar) while on the Google Voice window. It records the computer's sound and your mic. Turn the mic on in Game Bar settings once.
  3. Mac, QuickTime: File โ†’ New Screen Recording โ†’ Options โ†’ pick your microphone. QuickTime hears your mic only, so take the call on speaker (no earbuds) and it picks up both of you.
  4. Fathom records Zoom, Google Meet and Teams calls, not phone calls. Use it if you talk to someone on a video meeting.

1. Set up Google Voice on your phone (one time)

  1. Install the Google Voice app (App Store or Google Play) and sign in with the same Google account.
  2. In the app: โ˜ฐ โ†’ Settings โ†’ Making and receiving calls โ†’ choose "Prefer Wi-Fi and mobile data", so the call shows your Google Voice number.
  3. Always call and text people from inside the Google Voice app, never your regular phone app.

2. Record a call from your phone

iPhone (iOS 18.1 or newer), the easy way:

  1. In the Google Voice app: โ˜ฐ โ†’ Settings โ†’ Making and receiving calls โ†’ "Use carrier" (or "Prefer carrier"). Your Google Voice number still shows to the person.
  2. Call from the Google Voice app. The call opens in your iPhone's phone screen.
  3. Tap the record button (top left of the call screen). iPhone tells both of you the call is recorded.
  4. When you hang up, the recording is in the Notes app, in the "Call Recordings" folder. Tap โ€ขโ€ขโ€ข โ†’ Share โ†’ Save to Files or Google Drive.

Android:

  1. Same setting: Google Voice โ†’ Settings โ†’ Making and receiving calls โ†’ "Use carrier".
  2. If your phone app shows a Record button during the call (many Samsung and Pixel phones do), tap it. Recordings are in the phone app's recordings list.
  3. No Record button? Install Cube ACR from Google Play. It records calls on its own.

Any phone, always works: put the call on speaker and record it with a second device next to it: another phone or tablet (Voice Memos / Recorder), or your laptop on this page with "Phone on speaker" below.

Test once before your session: call your own cell or a friend, record 30 seconds, play it back. You should hear both voices.

When they call you back

Google Voice can record calls that come in. Turn it on once: Settings โ†’ Calls โ†’ Incoming call options ON. Then during an incoming call, press 4 to start recording and 4 again to stop. The recording shows up in Google Voice. Download it and put it in your Drive folder. (This works on the computer too.)

Works in Chrome on Mac and PC. Nothing is uploaded: the file saves to your computer.

Where recordings go

Into the same Google Drive folder you share on your dashboard (Show your work). One file per call or per block of calls. Then in Show your work, write one line per call: who, what happened, what's next.
